Vertical rhizome disking to reduce Elymus repens (quackgrass) abundance in grass-clover leys

چکیده

Elymus repens is a problematic perennial weed in annual crops, grasslands and leys. Rhizome fragmentation by vertical disking can potentially reduce E. abundance with minimal tillage, but data are lacking on its efficiency forage production. In two-year study (2017–2018, 2018–2019) conducted two grass-clover leys that were mostly weed-free except for large populations, this examined effects yield, botanical composition, rhizome biomass of at significant growth initiation spring (early fragmentation, ERF) and/or when conditions allowed after the first cut (late LRF). Cold, wet springs hard, dry soil summer delayed treatment both years, to late (ERF) summer/early autumn (LRF). year, ERF reduced first-cut yield 44% compared no while LRF decreased second- third-cut 24% 53%, respectively. year treatment, increased total average 10%, had effect. Over combined was 11% 4% LRF. Both treatments biomass, inconsistently (ERF 25% one only, sites). incidence 10% effect following year. Thus, leys, inconsistent be impaired, especially swards much repens. Moreover, hampered conditions.

Rhizome Fragmentation by Vertical Disks Reduces Elymus repens Growth and Benefits Italian Ryegrass-White Clover Crops

Tillage controls perennial weeds, such as Elymus repens, partly because it fragments their underground storage organs. However, tillage is difficult to combine with a growing crop, which limits its application. The aim of this study was to evaluate how soil vertical cutting with minimum soil disturbance and mowing affect the growth and competitive ability of E. repens in a grass-clover crop. A ...

Does White Clover (Trifolium repens) Abundance in Temperate Pastures Determine Sitona obsoletus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Larval Populations?

To determine if host plant abundance determined the size of clover root weevil (CRW) Sitona obsoletus larval populations, a study was conducted over 4 years in plots sown in ryegrass (Lolium perenne) (cv. Nui) sown at either 6 or 30 kg/ha and white clover (Trifolium repens) sown at a uniform rate of 8 kg/ha. This provided a range of % white clover content to investigate CRW population establish...

Variation in horizontal and vertical transmission of the endophyte Epichloë elymi infecting the grass Elymus hystrix.

Systemic fungal endophytes (Clavicipitaceae) of grasses reproduce sexually when the fungus forms stromata and contagious ascospores, or asexually by vertical transmission of hyphae into seeds and seedlings. Vertical transmission is predicted to favor reduced virulence compared with horizontal transmission in systems with both types of transmission. Here, variation in vertical and horizontal tra...

Estimation of the Botanical Composition of Clover-Grass Leys from RGB Images Using Data Simulation and Fully Convolutional Neural Networks

Optimal fertilization of clover-grass fields relies on knowledge of the clover and grass fractions. This study shows how knowledge can be obtained by analyzing images collected in fields automatically. A fully convolutional neural network was trained to create a pixel-wise classification of clover, grass, and weeds in red, green, and blue (RGB) images of clover-grass mixtures. The estimated clo...

Physiological and Morphological Responses of White Clover (Trifolium repens) and Red Clover (Trifolium pratense) Plants to Salinity Stress

Trifolium spp. are native plants in Iran exhibiting good ground cover po-tential. Salinity is a major environmental stress and today, 20% of the world cultivated areas and nearly half of all irrigated lands are affected by salinity. The main aim of this research was to study morphological and physiological adaptations of these native species under different salinity levels for urban landscape u...
